To truly grasp the driving role of emotion in creativity, we need to explore the interaction of our mind and body.

Think of the brain and our physical body as the tools that allow our mind to interact with the world. Some theories suggest that both our physical being (matter) and our thoughts and feelings (mind) arise from a fundamental level of reality. Just as the observer effect in physics implies interconnectedness, mind and matter might share a fundamental origin. This suggests our mental and emotional states could intrinsically influence our physical reality and creativity.

Amazingly, our brain is not static, but our mind actively shapes our brain. The principle "what fires together wires together" illustrates how our experiences and thoughts create and strengthen connections between brain cells, building neural pathways that support creativity. These pathways encourage a flexible mindset, allowing for neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and form new connections.

Our mind has two main components: intelligence and emotion. While intelligence provides the framework, emotion is the primary source for imagination, intuition, discovery, and innovation – all key drivers of creativity. Emotion is the superpower humans have over AI, which doesn't possess genuine emotions. Here are key aspects of emotion that contribute to creativity:

  • Acts as "energy in motion," an independent force that motivates our actions, communication, and ability to bounce back from challenges (resilience).

  • Adds feeling and awareness (sentience) to our intelligence, sparking experiences like love, joy, empathy, or sadness. This emotional layer enables quick judgments and the ability to think in unconventional ways.
     

Emotions can be triggered by conscious thought or by external vibrations. For example, the complex frequencies produced by acoustic string instruments, often considered to generate the most intricate vibrations followed by woodwinds, brass, and then percussion, can resonate with the water that makes up a large part of our bodies. These vibrations can correlate to temporary emotions: faster, higher frequencies tend to spark positive feelings, while slower, lower ones can correlate to negative feelings.
